Hardware and orphans
Getting into the white truck, we adjust our perspective from that of the white westerner to becoming part of the developing world. Memories come rushing back of the time we were here before, and the many places we have been that feel like the small African town of Livingstone. 5 of us are in the car as we drive down the dusty road, our house is just a minute from town. We drop Regina and Kara off at the corner and continue to ride with Dan to the hardware store. We drive a half-mile down the road, turn onto a side street, and pull off in front of a very poorly marked store. Dan has searched out all the hardware stores in town. He has been busy here, in the last 6 months, finding his way around, making friends with people in stores where he spends much of his time. Today he is buying yards and yards of 1.5inch plastic pipe. He brought back a water pump from that states. He needs this pipe to transport water from the river the where the men are working.
The property is in a village about an hour from town. It is on the Zambezi River and is the future of All Nations life here in Livingstone. There is an outreach group (with CPx) that live in the village 5 days a week. The set up tents on the property. The workers are busy building a fence around the entire property. This is mainly for security. The villagers are worried about Dan and Regina’s things being stolen. They do not even want them to leave the water pump there over night. So by building a simple fence they hope to deter any would be thieves. Which is understandable, because at this point there is only one small structure on the property, which acts as a shed, but not everything can fit in this shed. The water pump will aid the workers in building the fence by allowing them to more readily have water to mix their cement.
As we leave the hardware store, 20 minutes later. The workers in their blue jump suits, were in back searching for the correct pipe. It only took about 3 different men looking to find it. It is too large to fit in the back of the truck, so we bungee it to the top. Of cause we forget about it, and pick up a few tree branches as we drive along to our other stops.
This is the life of building and gathering supplies to create the vision God is fulfilling in this village.
This fence will precede the commencement of the building of the first orphan home. This home will be the prototype for all that follow, in this village, and in many other villages and, countries. I will share that vision in the next installment. We are passionate about filling this home and gaining enough funds to build it. The goal is that is self-sustaining, and would only require start up costs, and an emergency fund for the first year.
